Murrieta, Temecula both see population top 100,000
By JEFF HORSEMAN The Press-Enterprise
The cities of Murrieta and Temecula did not even formally exist 20 years ago, but now they have more than 100,000 people each, according to the latest estimates from the state Department of Finance.
In addition, Lake Elsinore is 200 people shy of 50,000, the department reported in figures released Thursday.
The estimates put Temecula's population, as of Jan. 1, at 101,057, up 3.1 percent from the year before. During the same time frame, Murrieta's population went up 2.9 percent to 100,173.
Formed in 1989, Temecula had 27,099 people as of the 1990 census. The 2000 census put the figure at 48,828.
Murrieta officials estimated the city had around 20,000 when it incorporated in 1991. By the 2000 census, Murrieta had 44,282 residents.
There are now 67 cities in California with populations of 100,000 or more, according to a state news release.
In an e-mail, Temecula Mayor Mike Naggar said the 100,000 mark was expected, citing among other things the growth in The Promenade mall, the expansion of major employers Abbott Laboratories and Professional Hospital Supply and efforts to build Temecula's first hospital.
Murrieta Mayor Rick Gibbs said his city's milestone comes as no surprise.
While the effect on Murrieta itself is small, Gibbs said the new population figure will allow the city to lure major employers and businesses such as upscale restaurants.
"It is a figure that we will be able to use in many forms and many venues as we market the city of Murrieta," he said.
The state estimated Lake Elsinore has 49,807 people as of Jan. 1, up 4.5 percent from a year ago. The city had 28,930 people in 2000.
Lake Elsinore Mayor Daryl Hickman could not be reached to comment Friday afternoon.

Southwest California, located in the heart of Southern California is a treasure to be discovered. Its blue skies, clean air and mild climate, cooled by ocean breezes traveling through the Rainbow Gap, make it a welcome destination for residents and visitors alike to enjoy year round recreational activities, annual special events and the pleasure of outdoor living at its best.
Southwest California is one of the fastest growing regions in California today, and the perfect place for growing businesses and families.
Families are an important part of Southwest California as evidenced by the abundance of parks, recreational facilities, amenities for senior citizens, quality child care facilities and schools that rank academically high statewide, according to the State Academic Performance Index.
French Valley Airport Extends Runway
The recent completion of a $4.9million project to extend the runway at Southwest California’s French Valley Airport from its original 4600 feet to the current 6000 feet was for safety reasons, according to Rob Field, director of Riverside County airports.
The shorter runway made it particularly difficult for larger aircraft, such as corporate jets, to take off on hot days in the less dense air. Airport officials explain that Learjet pilots either had to ramp up engines to full throttle to get off the ground, or take off with one-third to one-half a load of fuel.
French Valley Airport, located in Southwest California, adjacent to the communities of Temecula, Murrieta and Winchester is only minutes away from Interstate 15 and the 215 corridor which are distinguished by a proliferation of high-tech and manufacturing businesses.
Because the airport serves one of California’s fastest growing areas, and logs about 100,000 takeoffs and landings a year, the project was deemed crucial. “Because of the region’s growing popularity, French Valley is luring pilots from nearby areas of San Diego and Orange counties”, said Field. “It’s the old real estate mantra: location, location, location,” he said. “That’s why it’s so busy.”
Because of the steadily increasing activity, the runway extension isn’t the only major improvement planned. “French Valley will be the first one in our system to get a control tower,” Field said. That should happen in about two years.
French Valley’s wide-open approaches and ground support services accommodate most aircraft including jets and turbo-props. The airport fixed-base operators provide ground support services, on-field fuel services, maintenance and aircraft storage, ground transportation, maintenance services, hangars for most general aviation aircraft, ranging from single engine to corporate jets and charter service throughout Southern California.
The 12,500 square foot aviation center at French Valley offers a café, pilot briefing and flight planning areas, a conference room and a spacious lobby.
